Former World Champion Boxer to open Gym in Hamden
Monday, July 23, 2018
Chad Dawson has been shaped by boxing, rising from his childhood in New Haven to the pinnacle of the sport, and came away with the right to forever claim the title of world champion. Now, Dawson is hoping to share the lessons he learned over the course of his career with the next generation, as he opens Chad Dawson’s Championship Breed Boxing at 295 Treadwell St., Unit C-6, in Hamden. Dawson, the son of a prizefighter, said he began boxing at 8 years old, following in his father’s footsteps. He began to study under Brian Clark, the trainer at Ring One gym, and fell in love with the sport. The gym provided a home away from home, Dawson said — something to do after school each day and a place of refuge when he needed it. “I want kids to feel that same experience that I felt — having a place to come. If something’s not working over here, you can always come here and feel wanted and loved,” said Dawson. “I always had that growing up.”

For twenty years, Sue Kuselias and Jodee Webb, sister-in-laws and long time Hamden residents, have been conjuring up the store of their dreams. They knew it had to be beautiful, charming, affordable and a place they would want to hang out. They seriously considered opening a store way back when but then they quickly remembered that they had a combined total of 6 small kiddies between the two of them, so it probably wasn’t the most opportune time.
