Remarkably, after 26 years on 1842 Whiney Avenue in Hamden, Best Video is still a favorite gathering place for the latest DVD releases, hard-to-find-films and movie recommendations drawing families and film aficionados from all of New Haven and beyond.  Independently owned, it’s now become even more of a gathering place with its new Best Video Coffee Bar and Performance Space – which is located behind the coffee bar.

Best Video will have its Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony celebrating the Best Video Coffee Bar and Performance Space on Thursday, June 23rd, from 11 am to 1 pm.  Mayor Scott Jackson will attend to enjoy the very “Best” in Willoughby’s coffee, iced coffee, espresso and coffee drinks. All pastry and lunch items are provided by local purveyors, including Neil’s Donuts and Chestnut Foods.

In festivity for this event, attendants may enjoy a free 16oz cold brewed coffee, courtesy of Best Video and Coffee Bar.

Later that evening, at 7:30 PM, the new Performance Space kicks at Best Video off with The Sawtelles, an audience-thrilling husband and wife indie-pop duo. Their sparse but intricately arranged pop of the instrumentalists and singers is as lush as it is captivatingly unique. They have released 4 CDs; for a preview, see their website www.thesawtelles.com.

Admission - as for all of Best Video’s Performance Space events - is free.

Upcoming events at the Performance Space include: the live music of The Skamatix, Goodnight Blue Moon, Big Fat Combo, The Furors, David Chevan, Jeff Fuller, Bill Collins and the cabaret duo Christine Gill & Rich Moran.

Also scheduled is the highly vaunted story reading series Listen Here! (a partnership of New Haven Review and the New Haven Theater Company), the father/son duo of Paul and Josh Beckman reading their award-winning stories and poems, and a Sharen McKay series highlighting stories made into great films. Gregory B. Dubno and friends will offer stand up comedy.

Owner Hank remains committed to the store and the community. The space was developed with musician staff members Hank Hoffman, Richard Brown and James Velvet, who, it is rumored, will step up with their own music offerings.

To receive advance notice of all events, send your name and email address to info@bestvideo.com. Email addresses are not shared.
