Hamden Economic Development Corporation Makes Neighborhood Improvements and Helps Plant 20 New Trees in Highwood/Newhall.

The Highwood/Newhall neighborhood of Hamden has welcomed some new additions this fall. The Hamden Economic Development Corporation (HEDC), in conjunction with the Housing and Neighborhood Development (OHND) Office of Hamden has donated trees to the neighborhood.

A three-year remediation project was recently completed in the Highwood/Newhall neighborhood. During this process many trees were removed from the neighborhood, leaving the area looking barren. The HEDC took notice of the issue and decided to donate ten trees to the neighborhood. The OHND of Hamden matched HEDC’s original contribution, using the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program’s funds to plant an additional 10 trees.

Residents have helped decide where the trees should be planted. Residents were sent a brochure on the various trees that are best for the area, as well as to determine residential interest. Once the most impacted areas were determined, the Community Greenspace program planted several low impact trees this fall. An additional fifteen more will be planted in the neighborhood in the  spring of 2013.
