As the photo shows, the last truck load filled with lead covered building materials was hauled off site, completing the latest phase of construction at the future home of the Hamden Business Incubator, the home of the former Newhall Community Center at 496 Newhall Street. This $2 Million phase included significant interior demolition, the complete replacement of the roof, structural work, carpentry, site work preparation and the removal of virtually all remaining asbestos and lead in the building. It also included the removal of a 6,000 gallon oil tank.  The following also shows some before and after pictures of areas of the building, which was sold to the Hamden Economic Development Corporation (HEDC) in 2013 by the Town of Hamden.

“We would like to thank the Town staff and CT Department of Economic and Community Development for their continued support and funding for this project. They have nothing short of amazing in their teamwork to help us reclaim this valuable property and  to help the economy grow”, stated Dale Kroop, Executive Director of the Hamden Economic Development Corporation, the developer of the project. This phase of the project was funded with a $525,000 Brownfield grant and funding from the Urban Act program.

The final phase will begin in the spring of 2017 and be completed within one year.

Funding for this phase will come from the Urban Act funds secured earlier by the Town and HEDC, CT Historic Tax Credits, funds from the Federal Department of Commerce (EDA) and funds pending from Federal New Market Tax Credits/private equity program.

Occupancy will begin in late 2017, early 2018. Services for tenants and members of the incubator will include business mentoring, business education and hands on collaboration through a network of service providers.
