Clarion Hotel Opens on Wednesday, February 22nd with Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

After 16 months of extensive renovation and addition, Hamden’s Clarion Hotel & Suites opens for business on February 22, 2006 at 11:30 AM with a ceremonial ribbon cutting by Mayor Craig Henrici. The Hotel has been completely transformed with the addition of a new lobby, health club, 16 suites, and total rehabilitation of the original 90 hotel rooms.

The multi-million dollar renovation and addition program has created a unique, state of the art hotel in the center of Hamden on Whitney Avenue on what has historically been referred to as “college highway.” Novel to the New Haven area, the hotel will be the first totally non-smoking hotel in the market, 51 of the rooms will have exterior balconies. The entire facility will be set up for both wired and wireless internet access, and a complete array of entertainment alternatives will be offered in all rooms.

The hotel has been renovated by the Schaffer family, which originally built the Howard Johnson Inn, during the hay day of that illustrious franchise. Because of present day considerations and a need to reposition the hotel to reflect the modern needs of the community, the Schaffer family has rebranded the facility as a Clarion Hotel. To achieve a higher level of service and facility, Group One, an architectural and design firm from Boston, was commissioned to design the expansion and interior plan for the hotel. Reflective of the commitment to serve the community and to continue its role as an important contributor to the community, the hotel company has acquired art from local artists, predominately from Hamden. The original works will be displayed in the lobby and common areas. Reproductions of the local art will be hung in all the hotel rooms, offering local scenes, atypical of most hotels.

“We are very proud of this facilities transformation, and believe that it offers the most appealing and convenient hotel facility in the entire New Haven region,” stated Michael Schaffer, managing partner for the project. Mr. Schaffer went on to say, “My family has been committed to serve this community for over 40 years, and we look forward to an exciting new beginning as a state of the art new hotel, Hamden’s Clarion Hotel & Suites.”
